Football fever

The game of football generally flourished in England from around the 8th Century onwards. The game was incredibly popular with the working classes and there were considerable regional variations of the game throughout the country. Games were normally violent and disorganised affairs with any number of players - it was not uncommon for 1000 people to play in a single game. By the 11th Century, games were often played between rival villages and the ‘pitch’ could be an incredibly large area. Although, the game was gaining popularity amongst commoners, it was still largely disliked by the aristocracy and royalty. In fact on 13th April 1314 King Edward II actually banned football from London where street matches had become incredibly popular.

Ceasefire or Reinforcement

According to the latest news from Gaza Strip at least 1135 Palestinians have been killed and 5200 injured in Israel’s offensive so far of which more than 330 children. Thirteen Israelis have died, three of them civilians. Two buildings housing international journalists in Gaza, three hospitals and a UN compound were bombarded by Israeli forces as they continued to advance into the densely-populated Gaza City on Thursday January the 15th, as were a Red Crescent office near Gaza City and the main mosque in the southern city of Rafah. Unemployment hit record high

Eurozone unemployment saw another big jump in November, particularly in those European countries that are suffering the collapse of housing and financial market bubbles. The number of UK unemployment is already at 1.86 million, the highest level since the Labour government came to power in 1997, although that figure remains low by European standards. In France, headline unemployment rose 64,000 to 2.07 million in November, the biggest rise since 1993, following job cuts announced by carmakers and financial groups such as Peugeot and BNP Paribas. Pope without hope

Pope Benedict XVI was recently quoted saying that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as protecting the environment. Spreading the campaign that mankind needs to be saved from a destructive blurring of gender. At a time of year when we are expected to remember the message of Christ of peace and love to all mankind, what kind of example is the Pope trying to convey here. Read the rest of this entry »
